Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
July 6, 2008 Matthew 11:25-30

Call to Prayer: As we gather here, help us to be ever mindful of your presence with us. Make us one with you always, so that our joy may be holy and our love may give life. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.

A reading from the holy gospel according to Matthew

At that time Jesus exclaimed: "I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.

"All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.

"Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light."

The gospel of our Lord

Focus: Jesus encourages us to come to him when we are wearied by life. He will share our burdens and restore our peace and sense of balance.

Questions for reflection and sharing:

1. What words or phases stand out for you in this gospel?

2. Have you ever thought of yourself as meek and humble of heart? What does it mean?

3. Where do you find yourself in this gospel? Are you the wise and learned? Or the little ones? Or the laborers? Or the meek and humble? Where would you like to be?

4. As a Christian steward to what does this gospel call you? v
Concluding prayer: All loving God, Jesus offered thanks for revealing to those with childlike hearts the mysteries hidden from the learned and clever. Count us among those who know you and your Son, the teacher tender and humble in heart, that we may exchange our heavy burdens for his gentle yoke and in the heart of the gospel find rest for our souls. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.
